FLUID BED GRANULATOR
LOCATION: PUERTO RICO
MARKET SECTOR: SCI-TECH
SIZE: 10,000 SF
PS&S provided architectural and engineering services to support the expansion of an Oral Solid Dosage Facility in Puerto Rico.
The challenge was to avoid disrupting the ongoing manufacturing operations during construction.
THE PS&S SOLUTION
PS&S provided architectural and engineering services for a facility expansion that would provide for the installation of a new Fluid Bed Granulator (FBG) system and associated equipment.
As part of the master plan prepared by PS&S, in order to increase and change the product mix of a large Oral Dosage Facility, PS&S provided process equipment design and field assistance for the addition of a 300 kilogram fluid bed granulator and drier design to meet 100 microgram exposure limit.
The following systems were also involved:
- New portable Wash-in-Place (WIP) system
- New granulation fluid preparation system to service the new and existing FBG’s
- New sizing (milling) system
- Connections to plant and process utility systems
- Integration with process control system
The FBG involved a three-story high contained system with bottom discharge and was designed for automatic washing using a portable WIP system. The washing included the associated duct work and connection chutes.
The design integrated current and future operating capabilities for a variety of Oral Dosage products. The process is capable of being automatically Cleaned-in-Place (CIP).
Four PLC controlled process packages were integrated into a Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for overall process monitoring and control.
The building was expanded by 10,000 sf and modified to accommodate the new systems and meet cGMP requirements.
