Bergen County Utilities Authority
Little Ferry, New Jersey
The Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA) is a public utility providing sewage and solid waste disposal services for various municipalities in Bergen County, New Jersey. The BCUA wastewater treatment plant serves 46 municipalities in Bergen County, and processes an average of approximately 85 MGD of wastewater. PS&S provided general consulting engineering services to the BCUA in addition to evaluation, design, permitting, bid and construction phase services for various major projects. Some of the major projects completed by Paulus, Sokolowski and Sartor (PS&S) for the BCUA include:
Wastewater/Sewerage Related Projects:
- Trunk Sewer Rehabilitation: PS&S conducted an evaluation of several components of the BCUA collection system, including the Overpeck Creek and Hackensack Valley trunk sewer systems and the Northern Valley forcemain.
- Trunk Sewer River Crossing: PS&S designed and permitted two parallel 60" diameter reinforced concrete pipes across the Hackensack River to alleviate a bottleneck in the BCUA trunk sewer.
- Overflow Termination Study: PS&S conducted a remediation study of BCUA's six emergency sanitary sewer overflows.
- Infiltration/Inflow Study: PS&S investigated the BCUA sewer service area to quantify I/I and recommend areas for remediation and/or further investigation. Selected manholes were inspected and flow-monitored within each municipality.
- Pink Street Pumping Station: PS&S designed pump station upgrade facilities, including three new, vertical, variable speed pumps (3,500 gpm @ 214' TDH), automatic controls, vacuum priming system, standby generator and controls.
Sludge/Residuals Related Projects:
- Sludge Disposal Contract Development
- Sludge Dewatering Facilities Pilot Testing, Design and Permitting: Following evaluation and testing, PS&S designed a 40 dry ton per day sludge dewatering/handling system, including semi-automatic pumping, chemical addition, centrifuge dewatering, material conveyance, odor control facilities, and instrumentation and controls located in a new high-bay structure.
- Filtrate Handling/Storage Facilities Design: PS&S designed 2,000 linear feet of 12" ductile iron force main, chemical addition equipment, automatic sampling and a 1.3 million gallon welded steel tank with appurtenances.
- Chemical Stabilization Process Evaluation and Design: PS&S evaluated alternatives and designed a new sludge chemical stabilization facility, including a three-story process building, six external alkaline chemical storage silos, a pumping station and piping connections to the sludge dewatering facility. Design included chemical weighing, blending, and feeding process equipment, regenerative air dryers, a belt conveyor and roof top day tanks for chemical feed and storage, and an air handling system.
