Intermodal Ferry Terminal
Weehawken, New Jersey
Paulus, Sokolowski and Sartor (PS&S) provided engineering and permitting services for a new $25 Million NJ Transit/NY Waterway Port Imperial Intermodal Ferry Terminal in the Hudson River in Weehawken, New Jersey. The terminal property, which is located at the site of the Port Imperial Redevelopment Project, had contained elevated levels of contaminants associated with historical fill. As construction of the ferry terminal required dredging, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Office of Dredging and Sediment Technology analyzed the sediment and determined that sediment removal would not increase contamination of resources, allowing dredge materials to be beneficially utilized as a landfill cap in the New Jersey Meadowlands.
Engineering services included all site plan preparation, utilities, grading and stormwater management designs. Environmental services included a full National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) environmental assessment, US Army Corps Section 10/Section 404 Permits for construction and dredging, and NJDEP Waterfront Development, Coastal Zone Management Consistency and Executive Order 215 reviews.
The ferry terminal provides an important intermodal link to the NJ Transit Hudson-Bergen Light Rail System, providing additional mass-transit access and significant additional capacity to the trans-Hudson transportation network.
