Kean University
Student Housing
Union, New Jersey
This 850-bed complex is intended to provide a completely new residential experience for Kean University students. It includes 425 beds specifically for Freshmen, another 425 beds for Upperclassmen and a large cafeteria serving both.
The project is designed to encourage interaction of the residents outside their suites, with lounges and informal alcove spaces on each floor and common study, game and laundry facilities on the ground floor. Formal programs organized by Residence Life are accommodated in multipurpose lounges and meeting rooms throughout the project.
Intended to be split onto two sites, Paulus, Sokolowski and Sartor (PS&S), through creative master planning, was able to consolidate the project on one new site, saving both construction dollars and over two years in construction time. This solution also allowed the inclusion of a number of common facilities to serve both residence halls - dining, theater and computer study areas.
In order to provide facilities for Upperclassmen by December, 2008, PS&S designed the entire project in just five months, pre-bidding the precast structure just 14 weeks after the kick-off meeting for the project.
