Ramapo College Phase IX
Student Housing
Mahwah, New Jersey
Based on the success of Phase VIII, Paulus, Sokolowski and Sartor (PS&S) was awarded the architectural design and total engineering for this 432-bed dormitory, which opened on-time and on-budget in September, 2006.
Here the site constraints were completely different: a very small site, with two existing dorms separated from the academic core by parking lots, trailers and wooded brambles.
And the solution is very different - a nine-story mid-rise, shaped to form a new residential quadrangle. This quad is linked to another new quad that relates to the academic core, student center and library - enhancing the Campus Plan dramatically. Existing trees have been preserved along the edge of the new academic quad, softening the height of the project relative to the low-rise classroom building across the quad.
Interior planning is state-of-the-art. Suites feature four single bedrooms, with living rooms and pantries. Lounges, game rooms, and a fifty-seat "home theater" provide social focuses for the project, pulling in students from the other dorms as well. Information Technology includes wi-fi, cable TV, closed-circuit television (CCTV) security monitoring, as well as hard-wired data and telephone to each bedroom.
