RVSA:

Rahway Valley Sewerage Authority

Rahway, New Jersey

Paulus, Sokolowski and Sartor (PS&S) has been the Consulting Engineer for the Rahway Valley Sewerage Authority (RVSA) since 1997. The RVSA currently owns/operates a 40 MGD secondary wastewater treatment plant and trunk sewer system serving 11 member municipalities in Union and Middlesex Counties, New Jersey. As part of the ongoing assistance to the RVSA, PS&S provides multi-disciplined services on an as-needed basis.

Recently, PS&S assisted the RVSA in developing a Comprehensive Strategic Plan (CSP) to eliminate combined sewer overflows (CSOs) in the sewage collection system. The CSP involved the closure of two CSOs, construction of a 42" gravity relief sewer to convey excess wet weather flows over 6,100 feet to the RVSA treatment plant, and the upgrade of the RVSA plant from 40 MGD to 105 MGD to handle the additional flows. PS&S and subcontracted engineering partners developed engineering and architectural* plans for the treatment plant upgrade.

In addition, as a supplemental element to the major CSP plant upgrade, PS&S provided design and permitting services for a 6.1 MW Cogeneration/Sludge Drying Facility that will utilize digester and natural gas to feed four dual fuel gas engine generators, which will provide primary power to the RVSA upgraded (105 MGD) treatment facilities in addition to heating a 116 DT/day indirect sludge dryer. Thermal energy from the engine jacket water will also be utilized in the plant hot water system, meeting plant-heating requirements under almost all conditions. The sludge drying process will result in the conversion of RVSA's dewatered sludge at 20-25% solids to a Class "A" product with approximately 90-95% solids. The CSP treatment plant upgrade and Cogeneration/Sludge Drying Facilities are currently being constructed.

Other recent projects completed by PS&S for the RVSA include:
