University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)
Newark, New Jersey
UMDNJ needed this building as soon as possible, to be designed and constructed in the same time that the next building in their master plan was being designed to go on the site of the existing BHS facility. We were recognized at the dedication as delivering "the best managed project the University has ever had".
The tight-knit coordination on the project also was able to return very significant savings to the original construction budget. PS&S was the sole-source design responsibility, providing geotech, civil, structural, MEP/Fp, architecture and interior design. This allowed us to overcome difficult site conditions (old basements, construction debris, existing pavement, etc.) without schedule delays. By using caissons and a structural ground floor slab, we essentially spanned over all of it, leaving it encapsulated by the existing pavement (which also provided an clean construction site).
The facility's 120,000 sf program included a variety of uses, including clinic space, medical offices, laboratories, admin/billing, teaching spaces, and a small residential component for psychiatric patients.
