To meet those needs, Verizon operates many critical data and telecom switching abilities, which require high quality and reliable electric service. Electric demand is also high at these facilities.
While meeting its customers' needs with innovative and reliable services, Verizon takes seriously environmental stewardship. Verizon's Zeckendorf Network Operations Center, located in Garden City, NY, is host of an innovative green power project that achieved high marks in meeting Verizon's needs for clean, reliable power.
Paulus, Sokolowski and Sartor (PS&S) designed, and our KeySpan affiliates constructed and maintain a “green” power supply system for the Verizon network operations center located in Garden City, Long Island.
Verizon wished to install additional "emission-free" generating capacity, enhance reliability, and reduce operating costs. A fuel-cell driven system allowed this telecommunication company to take advantage of United States Department of Energy (US DOE) funding programs, add 3,400 kW of on-site generation capacity, and as a result, reduced electric cost and improved plant reliability.
The system's major equipment consists of seven 200 kW each UTC fuel cells, one 2,000 kW Caterpillar 3516 (converted to dual fuel application) backup and peak shaving engine, two 70-ton absorption chillers, and the balance of the plant consisting of cooling towers, fluid coolers, pumping system, control integration with existing systems, PLC control system and monitoring instrumentation.
