PS&S was one of three firms in a paid design competition for the expansion of this central New Jersey Campus.
The program called for the creation of over 2,000,000 sf of office space, as well as 300,000 sf of laboratory and pilot plant uses.
The major planning challenge was management of the flood hazards. The area, which experienced significant losses in Hurricane Floyd, was susceptible to flooding and needed an upgraded flood system.
THE PS&S SOLUTION
Approximately 1,000,000 sf of existing space was assessed and considered for up-grade, adaptive re-use or demolition.
PS&S developed an innovative flood control system that minimized the need for office buildings on stilts over parking (which was a common solution proposed by others). Significant savings were possible by creating efficient parking garages that resided separately from the office and lab buildings.
The plan also featured extensive, well-integrated courtyards and green spaces linking the buildings, which provided a sense of unity and amenity for the campus.
