PS&S was requested to develop the program and design for new laboratories and offices to support. The projects utilized all in-house disciplines including architecture, mechanical, plumbing, fire protection and electrical.
It was noted during design discussions that some of the labs had powder control concerns. PS&S evaluated the use of containment hoods and dust collection equipment as part of the detailed engineering effort. An additional challenge was to phase the construction during operation hours to avoid operational disruption.
Substances with Occupation Exposure Levels of 3A were handled in the labs.
THE PS&S SOLUTION
The design included down flow containment booths to accommodate portable lab equipment. Vented balance enclosures were also incorporated to control powders that required low-air flow for weighing procedures. PS&S was able to reuse laboratory casework and benches to save costs. PS&S provided the programming, conceptual design, design development, construction documents and construction phase services for a new lab to accommodate an Advanced Material Processing Lab, Solids & Amorphous Lab, Soft Gel Research Lab, Dissolution Lab and a Liquids Lab.
