THE OPPORTUNITY

PS&S was asked to provide professional design services for the relocation of an existing generator and installation of a new generator at the Academy of Allied Health and Science School located in Neptune Township, New Jersey. Services included architecture, MEP, cost estimating, bid administration, construction administration, and closeout services.

THE CHALLENGE

The installation of the new generator required the coordination of underground utilities and a reconfiguration of the layout at the school side yard, which included two storage sheds and an electric transformer. The two existing sheds were encroaching on a wetland buffer, and the layout needed to maintain access around the building for owner and fire engine access requirements. Back-up power was required for the kitchen refrigeration units so food stock did not have to be replaced after each power outage resulting in thousands of dollars in food waste. Additionally, the district wide internet server hub, dual seepage pumps, security door devices, fire alarm panel, interior lighting in the office areas, and bathrooms required power by the generator.

THE PS&S SOLUTION

PS&S developed a layout relocating all structures outside the wetland buffer, enclosed in new fencing for added security of the generator and sheds. The fencing was placed in accordance with required clearances from the generator and allowed a minimum 27’ clear path around the school building. All power lines were designed to run above existing ceilings back to the distribution panels in the main electric room. The existing generator was relocated to another school for use by the diesel mechanics class.
