PIPELINE

MARKET SECTOR: ENERGY UTILITY

SIZE: 4.6 MILES

THE OPPORTUNITY

A major gas utility company needed to replace a portion of their existing transmission pipeline system within an accelerated schedule.  The project scope was comprehensive and required that the selected consultant provide all necessary Gas Engineering, Pipeline Survey, Environmental, Permitting, Geotechnical, Cultural Resource, and Right Of Way services as part of a full-service package.

THE CHALLENGE

To minimize the purchase of additional R.O.W, the replacement pipeline was designed to be installed within the existing easement. The design also had to maintain gas supply to an existing regulator station. Additionally, PS&S would need to address and resolve landowner issues as they arose and identify and minimize regulatory and environmental concerns. The constraints of the existing route included numerous wetlands and Green Acres issues, two active railroad crossings, the crossing of Route 78, and the management of activities proximate to three historic districts adjoining the alignment.

THE PS&S SOLUTION

Following the complete resurvey of the route, PS&S considered various Trenchless Technology solutions to minimize environmental impacts. The existing easement was able to be fully utilized except for select areas that required reconfiguring of the pipeline to allow for the future use of ILI tools. Landowners were contacted early in the process and their concerns were solicited and considered to ensure their understanding and support during the replacement of the line.
