THE OPPORTUNITY
The Township of Ocean Sewerage Authority (TOSA) owns and operates the sanitary sewer collection system located throughout Ocean Township (Monmouth), New Jersey as well as the surrounding municipalities. The Wayside Pump Station primarily serves the Wayside Elementary School as well as several households in the area. In order to maintain reliable continuous operation for their customers, PS&S was hired to provide professional engineering services for the replacement and upgrade of the Wayside Pump Station and improvements to the existing force main .
THE CHALLENGE
The existing pump station was located on a small site along the side of Green Grove Road in a grass area near Wayside Park. Due to the existing alignment of the gravity sewer system and existing force main, keeping the pump station in operation and installing a new pump station within the same site proved to be a challenge. Additionally, the existing force main is installed through an easement on the Wayside Elementary School property.
THE PS&S SOLUTION
PS&S found a location, in the corner of the existing site, to install the new pump station and flow meter chamber, while keeping the existing pump station in operation to avoid any bypass pumping. The new pump station included an integral valve vault and wet well, a flow meter chamber, odor control system and new controls. The existing pump station was demolished, and the entire site was paved to allow for easier maintenance in the future. In order to protect the new pumps, the installation of an air release manhole was completed on the force main just offsite of the school’s property.
