DISCIPLINES INVOLVED
PS&S has provided services to the Sparta Township Board of Education over the past ten years. In addition to engineering and architectural design related to the new middle school and expanded high school, PS&S provided wastewater and infrastructure related planning, design and permitting services for several Sparta schools, including:
- Alpine School Wastewater Treatment Plant Replacement: PS&S provided planning, design, construction and start-up phase services for a new 10,000 gpd wastewater treatment facility designed to replace an existing extended aeration package plant. Due to aging deterioration, the existing facility could not operate in an efficient mode or meet NJDPES/DSW permit effluent levels. The newly installed plant was a batch process, sequencing batch reactor capable of efficient operation and control, while meeting NJDPES/DSW discharge limits. The new plant included the following facilities: influent equalization, sequencing batch reactor tank, waste sludge holding tank; filter dosing tank; effluent drum filter; UV disinfection system; and supplemental chemical treatment system.
- Middle School Pump Station and Force Main: PS&S designed a pump station and force main to convey wastewater from a new 127,000 square foot middle school to two existing wastewater treatment plants located at the existing high school, a distance of approximately 6,500 feet. The pump station includes two 175 gpm, 167 TDH, submersible pumps, variable frequency drives, sewage grinder, controls and an emergency generator. The facility also incorporates Bioxide® chemical feed for odor control.
- High School Wastewater Facilities Design: PS&S provided planning, design and construction phase services for the interim improvement of High School wastewater treatment plant No.1 including septic/settling tank improvements, new filter dosing facilities and intermittent sand filter improvements. Modifications were required to increase the effective capacity of the plant in order to handle additional flows from the new middle school.
In addition to the above capital projects PS&S also provided the following services:
- PS&S prepared an Amendment to the Township of Sparta’s adopted Wastewater Management Plan to provide for the termination of one of the existing High School discharges and increase the service area of the second discharge to include a new Middle School. The Amendment involved revision of text and flow quantities associated with the WMP document. Presentation and approvals were required from the Township of Sparta, Sussex County Planning Department and the NJDEP.
- PS&S assisted the Board of Education in the purchase/reservation of sewage treatment capacity for a proposed new school in the Township of Sparta. Reservation involved transfer of Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority (SCMUS) flow rights from Ogdensburg to Sparta Township.
