THE OPPORTUNITY

The Newton Lake Dredging Project was a $23 million project to remove vegetation and sediment from the Newton Creek Watershed across 5 Lake segments, Peter’s Creek, and two adjacent ponds. The 103-acre Newton Lake Park spans three municipalities in Camden County, NJ.

THE CHALLENGE

The project involved the removal of approximately 217,000 cubic yards of material from the Lake segments, 40,000 of which was contaminated with arsenic. Ecological limitations restricted the dredge operational windows for migration and nesting seasons for turtles and fish.

THE PS&S SOLUTION

PS&S supported our client, the Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority, throughout the execution of the dredging project as the owner’s representative and project manager. The two-plus year project is now complete, at a total cost of $23 million, slightly below the original $25 million projection. The dredging project involved the removal of vegetation and sediment to 5-feet below water level to return the water depth for recreational use and to limit the re-growth of surface water vegetation such as spatterdock.
